Uttaradit is located in the northern region of the country. Neighbouring provinces are Nan, Phitsanulok, Phrae and Sukhothai. It also has a border with Xaignabouli in Laos. The Nan River runs through the province of Uttaradit and about 45 kilometres north of the city Uttaradit is the Queen Sirikit Dam. This dam has created a lake that is approximately 250 square kilometres which is fed by the Nan River. The name Uttaradit means “Northern Landing”, because it used to be a major trade centre on the Nan river. Most of the province used to be covered with teak forests which was the main export product of Uttaradit province. The largest teak tree in the world is estimated to 1,500 years old and can be found at the Ton Sak Yai Park. The tree is nearly 10 meters in circumference and 37 meters in height.
