Tak is located in the western region of the country. Neighbouring provinces are Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Kamphaeng Phet, Lampang, Lamphun,Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Sawan, Sukhothai and Uthai Thani. It also has a border with the Kayin State of Myanmar. Tak province has the largest dam in Thailand, The Bhumibol Dam which is named after King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Construction was started in 1958 and it was completed in 1964. It is fed by the river Ping which is one of the sources of the Chao Phraya river and the lake created by the dam covers an area of 300 square kilometres.
