Mae Hong Son is also known as Maehongson, Maehongsorn or Mae Hong Sorn and is located in the northern region of the country. Neighbouring provinces are Chiang Mai and Tak. It also has borders with Kavin State, Kavah State and Shan State of Myanmar. It is over 900 kilometers from Bangkok. Mae Hong Son translates as The City of Three Mists has been built in a deep valley surrounded by high mountains and is somewhat isolated from the outside world. It is the most mountainous province in Thailand and has an area of nearly 14,000 square kilometers. The area used to be home to large numbers of wild elephants and governors of Chiang Mai used to organize round ups of these elephants which were then trained before being sent to work elsewhere in the country. The city of Mae Hong Son has a small airport which brings in growing numbers of tourists from Chiang Mai. The man tourist attractions in Mae Hong Son include the stunning natural scenery, many hill-tribe communities and a variety of adventure opportunities such as white water rafting.
