Lop Buri is on the east side of the Chao Phraya river between the Lopburi River and Pa Sak Rivers. The former name for the city was Lavo which has its origins in the Dvaravati period. Many impressive temples were build in the city by the Khmer before the city became part of the Thai kingdom of Sukhothai and later of Ayutthaya. The Lop Buri was chosen to be the largest military base in Thailand. in 1938, by Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram
