Chiang Rai is located in the northern region of the country and is the northernmost province of Thailand.. Neighbouring provinces are Chiang Mai , Lampang and Phayao. In the north it borders the Bokeo of Laos and Shan State of Myanmar The area where the three countries border each other is often referred to as The Golden Triangle. The north of the province of Chiang Rai belongs to the so-called Golden Triangle. This is where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet in an area which used to be dangerous to visit due to the cross border drug smuggling. The border with Laos is defined by the Mekong river. The border with Myanmar is defined by the Ruak River at Mae Sai. The town of Chiang Rai is on the banks of the River Kok.. The western part of the province has some spectatular mountain scenery while the eastern part is relatively flat river plains. The mountain Doi Tunag (1,389 meters high) is the most important mountain in Chiang Rai province with the Wat Phra That Doi Tung temple built on it. This temple dates back to the year 911 and close to this is the Doi Tung royal villa.
