Ayutthaya or Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is located in the central region of the country. Neighbouring provinces are Ang Thong, Lop Buri, Nakhon Pathom Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Saraburi and Suphan Buri. The city of Ayutthaya is 76 kilometres north of Bangkok and was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong. It was the capital of Siam for more than 400 years and this era, is usually referred to as the Ayutthaya period which ran from 1350 until 1767 when the city was sacked by the Burmese. The ruins of the old capital can be seen in the Ayutthaya historical park which was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1991. At his height Ayutthaya city was one of Indo - China’s most prosperous cities and this historical site is in the boundaries of the modern city of the same name.
